To say that Georgetown was hanging by a thread would be generous. They were out of the tournament without a Big East tourney championship, which, with 3 McDonald's All Americans, they had the talent to do. But this fantastically disappointing Hoya season came to a whimpering close (unless you count the NIT) with a first round loss to St. John's, giving the Johnnies (6-12 Big East) a season sweep of JTIII's crew. What rhymes with "We Are! Georgetown!"? "You Are! NIT Bound!" St. John's 64 - Georgetown 59.

Snip. Snip. Bye.
Incredible. Cincinnati was hanging by the thinnest of threads after 3 straight losses to end the Big East season. Their only possible ticket to the dance was a decent run through the Big East tourney, probably no worse than the semifinals. But apparently DePaul's motivation to win a Big East game after going 0-18 (!!!!!) during the conference season was greater than Cincy's desire to dance. Thread snipped. DePaul 67 - Cincinnati 57.

That Cincy loss hurts Providence. Beating Depaul may actually cause Providence's RPI to go down because Depaul is so terrible. And it deprives them of an opportunity for a decent win against the Bearcats. Now, their only opportunity to impress is a too-difficult quarterfinal game against Louisville. They needed winnable games against quality opponents. They're lined up for the worst of both worlds.
ReplyDeleteI'm really pushing for Provy to get in, because I think they'd put up a good fight as a 10 or 11 seed. Looking on the bright side, the DePaul win over Cincy wasn't that bad of an outcome.
ReplyDeleteTrue, a win over Cincy is better than a win over DePaul. But Provy needs to beat Louisville anyway. Cincy is trash. A win over DePaul is more likely (and was accomplished earlier today).
In short, I liked Provy's chances of {beating DePaul and beating Louisville} than {beating Cincy and getting lucky on the bubble}. We'll see where we stand 24 hours from now.
